Rating of the best potato varieties for 2020

Potatoes are one of the main root crops not only in Russia, but also in Belarus and Ukraine. New products appear on the market that bring high yields in any regions of our country, although the ripening time is very important when choosing. In the article, we will consider the basic recommendations for choosing varieties, what to look for when buying, present the popular models, according to buyers, and the best options for the price.

Characteristic

For a good harvest, you need to choose the right planting site, it should be illuminated by the sun, moisture should not stagnate on it (otherwise, the roots will start to rot). Potatoes are a root crop of the nightshade family, so previous plantings are also important for it, for example, if tomatoes, peppers, eggplants were planted on this site last year, then the potatoes may not take root. Conversely, potatoes will take root well after planting them in place: pumpkins, cabbage, legumes.

Each producer tries to bring out potatoes that will be the most delicious and at the same time well stored. Therefore, the best manufacturers each year release to the market new varieties of varieties that have the same functionality, but have a different type and color. They try to bring it out with good taste, while preventing pests and infections from infecting it.

Types of potatoes for various characteristics

  1. By types of use: table, feed, technical, universal.
  2. Ripening: the earliest, mid-ripening and late.
  3. By type of soil: sandy, clayey, universal.
  4. By yield.
  5. By the degree of resistance to diseases and pests.
  6. According to climatic conditions: heat-resistant, frost-resistant.
  7. For taste.
  8. By the shelf life.

These indicators should be taken into account in order to avoid mistakes when choosing seed potatoes.
For different countries, different root crops are characteristic, for example, in Ukraine the most popular varieties are: Dnipryanka, Povin, Zabava, Chervona Ruta.

Planting process

Soil preparation

It begins with digging, saturating the earth with oxygen. Then the soil must be fertilized, and only after that start planting. For a good harvest, elements such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are important, fertilizers with these microelements should be chosen for feeding the land before planting. However, you need to use all the funds strictly according to the instructions and do not forget about their dangerous properties in case of an overdose.

Tuber preparation

The selected potatoes are sorted out, dirt removed and dried in the sun. They are folded into a box in one layer, a green (unsuitable for food) tuber is also used. And determine the way the seeds will germinate:

  1. Dry. They are placed in a bright place with a temperature of + 18-20 degrees.
  2. Wet. Wet humus or sawdust is placed at the bottom of the box, germinated at a temperature not exceeding +15 ° C.
  3. Mixed. In dry form, in the light, germinate until sprouts appear, then stored in moist soil until planting.

Landing

Potato yield depends not only on characteristics, soil, climate and proper care. An important element is the landing method, the list of methods is quite large, we will consider the most basic ones.

Distance between rows of tubers when planting:

  • early: 60 cm;
  • mid-season and late: 70 cm

Distance between tubers in a row:

  • early 30 cm;
  • mid-season and late - 35 cm.

Basic planting methods:

  • Combs. The combs are made 15 cm high and potatoes are planted in them. They are used for soils on which there is poor air exchange or groundwater is located close.
  • Trenches. It is used for sandy soils in arid climates or for soils that retain moisture poorly. They make trenches and land in them.
  • Shovel landing. With a shovel or pitchfork, they dig in the ground in rows and plant a root crop in the holes. The oldest planting method.
  • By the Meatlider method. The beds are formed with a width of 45 cm. Potatoes are planted in two rows, in a checkerboard pattern. This method does not require hilling and weeding.
  • Dutch technology. They are planted in rows 45 cm wide and about 70 cm apart.
  • According to the Gülich method. The plot is divided into squares with a side of 1 meter, in the center of the square the soil is loosened, fertilized and a tuber is planted. After it sprouts, the sprouts are laid on the ground “in a fan” and sprinkled with earth on top. This is how a strong root system is formed in the bushes.
  • Under the material. Dark film or acrylic is able to attract heat, so the harvest ripens faster. The plot is covered with a film, holes are made in the fabric in a checkerboard pattern (about 10x10 cm), the ground is plowed and fertilized under them, and the root crop is planted. The benefits and harms of this method: benefits - a decrease in the ripening period, pests - plants may not take root, the inconvenience of watering, the composition of the material can have a negative effect on the vegetable.
  • Using a walk-behind tractor. After digging the earth with a walk-behind tractor, the soil is leveled, marked out and planting begins. There are special walk-behind tractors with the function of planting potatoes, then the planting process is simplified at times.
